Description

Children begin noticing differences in people from a very young age, including differences in race, culture, and identity. When educators and caregivers address these topics thoughtfully and respectfully, they help children develop empathy, fairness, and an appreciation for diversity. This course is designed to help participants confidently guide conversations about race while promoting inclusive values within early learning environments.

Throughout this course, participants will learn age-appropriate ways to talk with children about race and cultural differences. The course explores how children develop their understanding of identity and fairness, and how educators can respond to children’s questions and observations in ways that promote respect and understanding.

Participants will also explore how bias forms and how it can influence attitudes and behaviors, even at an early age. Educators will learn how to help children recognize unfairness, challenge stereotypes, and develop empathy toward others. The course provides strategies for addressing difficult situations, guiding meaningful conversations, and helping children build positive relationships with peers from different backgrounds.

In addition, the course will highlight practical ways to create inclusive classrooms and learning communities. Participants will learn how to select diverse books and materials, incorporate multicultural perspectives into activities, and build environments where all children and families feel seen, respected, and valued.

By the end of this course, educators and caregivers will have the confidence and tools to foster respectful conversations about race and diversity, helping children develop the awareness, empathy, and social skills needed to build inclusive and supportive communities.

This course provided such important guidance on how to approach conversations about race and bias with young children in a thoughtful and age-appropriate way. I appreciated how it emphasized honesty, empathy, and respect while helping educators create inclusive classroom environments. The examples and strategies made these complex topics feel more approachable and manageable.

Danielle C.

This course was both meaningful and empowering. It encouraged educators to create safe spaces where children can ask questions and learn about diversity in a healthy way. The focus on modeling kindness, addressing bias, and celebrating differences was especially powerful. I feel much more prepared to guide these conversations with confidence and care.
