Administering medication safely and accurately is an important responsibility for educators and caregivers working in Montessori environments. While Montessori programs emphasize independence and child-centered learning, maintaining children’s health and safety remains a top priority. This course is designed to provide staff with the knowledge and procedures necessary to administer medication responsibly while following program policies, licensing requirements, and best practices.

Throughout this course, participants will learn the essential steps involved in safe medication administration, including obtaining proper authorization, verifying medication instructions, documenting administration accurately, and maintaining confidentiality. Participants will gain an understanding of the procedures that help protect both children and staff while ensuring medications are administered correctly.

The course explores the proper handling and administration of prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and emergency medications. Participants will learn how to safely store medications, monitor expiration dates, maintain accurate records, and recognize potential medication errors before they occur.

In addition, participants will learn how to identify and follow the “rights” of medication administration, ensuring the correct child receives the correct medication, dosage, method, and timing. The course also addresses procedures for monitoring children after medication is administered and responding appropriately to adverse reactions or emergencies.

The course emphasizes the importance of communication and collaboration with families, healthcare providers, and school leadership to ensure children’s health needs are met safely and consistently. Participants will learn how accurate documentation and clear communication contribute to a safe and supportive Montessori environment.
