Foundations of Infant Care

Foundations of Infant Care is a focused mini pathway designed to help early childhood educators strengthen the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed to provide safe, responsive, and developmentally appropriate care for infants. The first year of life is a period of rapid growth and change, and the care infants receive during this time plays an important role in supporting their physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and language development.

Throughout this pathway, educators will explore key aspects of infant development and learn how everyday caregiving experiences can become meaningful opportunities for learning and connection. Topics include understanding developmental milestones, recognizing individual differences, responding to infants’ cues, supporting early communication, and creating environments that encourage exploration while maintaining safety and consistency.

The pathway also addresses essential infant health and safety practices, including safe sleep and strategies for reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related dangers. Educators will strengthen their understanding of how safe sleep environments, consistent routines, supervision, and appropriate caregiving practices contribute to infant well-being.

Additional learning focuses on the unique needs of newborns during the first months of life. Educators will examine common caregiving routines such as feeding, diapering, comforting, holding, tummy time, and supporting rest. Emphasis is placed on responsive caregiving and understanding how warm, consistent interactions help infants develop trust, security, and strong relationships with their caregivers.

As educators progress through the pathway, they are encouraged to reflect on their own classroom practices and consider how small, intentional interactions can make a meaningful difference in an infant’s development. Talking with infants during routines, responding promptly to their needs, offering safe opportunities for movement and exploration, and maintaining predictable care can all contribute to a nurturing learning environment.

By completing the Foundations of Infant Care Mini Pathway, educators will build a stronger foundation for supporting infants during one of the most important periods of early development and will gain practical strategies they can apply immediately within their infant classrooms.
