Description

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) remains one of the leading causes of death among infants under one year of age. Although the exact causes are not fully understood, extensive research has shown that following safe sleep practices can greatly reduce the risk and help protect infants during this vulnerable stage of development.

This course is designed to help early childhood educators, caregivers, and childcare providers develop a clear understanding of SIDS, safe sleep practices, and the steps necessary to create safe sleep environments for infants. Participants will learn about current research, risk factors associated with SIDS, and the importance of implementing consistent sleep safety guidelines in childcare settings.

Throughout the course, participants will explore recommended safe sleep practices, including proper sleep positioning, appropriate sleep surfaces, and how to maintain a hazard-free sleep environment. The course will also address how room temperature, bedding, clothing, and supervision play a role in reducing potential risks during sleep.

Participants will also learn about safe sleep policies and procedures commonly required in childcare programs, as well as strategies for communicating these practices with families to ensure consistency between home and childcare environments. Understanding and applying these guidelines helps ensure that all infants receive the safest possible care while sleeping.

By the end of this course, participants will have the knowledge and confidence needed to create and maintain safe sleep environments, recognize potential hazards, and follow best practices that help reduce the risk of SIDS while supporting infants’ health and well-being.
